Squamish is the fastest-growing municipality in the Lower Mainland, with 23,819 residents in 2021, a jump of 22% in five years, and sits halfway between Vancouver and Whistler at the top of Howe Sound. It has turned from a mill town into an outdoor-recreation city: the Stawamus Chief, the Sea to Sky Gondola, world-class climbing, mountain biking and kiteboarding are the reasons people move here, and most new residents commute to Vancouver, about an hour south. The listings are split between townhouses and condos in the new neighbourhoods (Downtown Squamish along the waterfront, University Highlands on the hill above downtown, Garibaldi Estates) and detached homes in the older ones (Brackendale, Valleycliffe, Hospital Hill, Garibaldi Highlands). Squamish has no rail service; the Sea to Sky Highway is the only road, and that single-road access is part of what keeps the town the size it is.
